Before you place order
1. Check your documents can be legalised
You can get a document legalised (apostilled) if it has been issued or certified by an authorised UK public body or official.
Documents that can be legalised directly
- Court-issued documents sealed with an original (wet ink) court seal
- Public registry certificates – such as birth, marriage, or death certificates, or company documents from Companies House
- Government department letters signed by an authorised official (e.g. confirmation of tax registration)
- Medical certificates signed by a registered UK doctor, and the doctor’s signature must be registered with the FCDO to use the Express (24-hour) service.
If the signature is not registered, the document must be certified by a solicitor as an original. - The solicitor who is certifying the documents must be registered with the FCDO.
Documents that require certification before legalisation
- Powers of attorney, contracts, or qualification certificates
- Certified copies of passports, driving licences, or other identification
If you’re unsure, upload your document during the order process and our team will review it before submission.
2. Confirm any special requirements
Before you apply, contact the person or organisation requesting the legalised document and check:
- Whether they need original documents or certified copies
- Whether the documents must be signed by a UK notary or solicitor
3. Choose the type of apostille you need
There are two types of apostilles available in the UK:
Paper-based Apostille
- Requires posting or delivering your original document.
- Commonly used for birth, marriage, court, or government-issued documents.
Electronic Apostille (e-Apostille)
- Requires uploading an electronically signed PDF certified by a UK solicitor or notary (using QES).
- Delivered digitally for faster turnaround.
You may still need a paper-based apostille if the recipient requests it or if your document type isn’t eligible for e-Apostille.
4. Documents not eligible for e-Apostille
The following documents must be submitted for a paper-based apostille only:
- Birth, death, marriage, civil partnership, or adoption certificates
- ACRO police certificates (England & Wales)
- DBS certificates (England & Wales)
- Disclosure certificates (Scotland & Northern Ireland)
- Fingerprint certificates
- ACCA membership certificates
5. Final checks before placing an order
Check whether the person or organisation requesting your legalised documents requires:
- A paper-based apostille, or whether an electronic apostille (e-Apostille) is acceptable for your document type.
- One apostille certificate for a group of documents, or a separate apostille for each individual document.
- If your document requires certification, would you prefer it to be completed by a Solicitor or a Notary Public?
If you have multiple documents, confirming these details in advance will save time and prevent unnecessary costs.
Understanding the specific requirements before you order helps ensure a smooth, accurate, and compliant legalisation process for your UK documents.
